Catching up on Library checkouts

Wow, February went by quickly. I visited PA with the boys for six days, then brought my mom down to visit with us for 10 days before she flew back to Fort Myers, FL. We have been busy and still checking out books at the library, so I have some catching up to do on our library books if I want to keep a good record of what we are reading We have been there three times since the last time I posted!

Two Travelers
By Christopher Manson
ISBN: 0-8050-1214-1

When the emperor Charlemagne sends his servant Isaac with greetings of peace to the caliph of Baghdad, the caliph in return presents him with "an entire elephant" named Abulabaz, whom Isaac must then escort to France. It's an uneasy match, for elephant and man are truly strangers to each other, and the two set out on their journey with mutual distrust. But as they cross stormy seas and rugged mountains, the two travelers begin to rely on one another, and by trip's end Isaac and Abulabaz are the best of friends. What will happen when they have to part?

Based on a historical account of Charlemagne's court and illustrated with handsome, detailed watercolors, Christopher Manson's tale is an exciting evocation of the eight century, and the poignant story of two travelers' journey to friendship.

By John Lithgow
Illustrated by Leeza Hernandez
ISBN: 978-1-4424-6743-9
Oh, children! Remember! Whatever you may do, never play music right next to the zoo.
They'll burst from their cages, each beast and each bird, desperate to play all the music they've heard.

While a little boy and his family listen to an outdoor concert, chaos ensues: The nearby zoo animals decide to join in on the fun! John Lithgow's lyrical text leads to harmonious hilarity in this story that introduces musical instruments in a low-key way. Lively illustrations by Leeza Hernandez showing the exuberant animals and the disgruntled conductor and musicians brighten this tale even more. A CD of John Lithgow performing "Never Play Music Right Next to the Zoo" is included.
